What Happens at Braces Removal

Braces removal, clinically known as debonding, is a single 30 to 60-minute appointment at the end of active treatment. It requires no anaesthetic, no drilling, and no downtime. Patients walk in with brackets on and walk out with a polished smile and a custom retainer plan, all scanned during the same visit.

1

Bracket Removal

Dr. Viecilli uses orthodontic pliers to gently squeeze the base of each bracket, breaking the adhesive bond against the enamel. Archwires come off first, then the brackets one by one. Patients feel brief pressure, not sharp pain. This step takes 5 to 10 minutes.

2

Adhesive Cleanup

A specialised polishing bur removes the residual bonding cement without damaging the enamel underneath. The sensation is closer to a routine dental cleaning than anything the patient has felt during active treatment. This step takes 10 to 20 minutes, depending on how much composite was used.

3

Polish & Retainer Scan

Teeth are polished smooth, and a Medit i700 scan captures the finished arch shape so the patient’s custom Essix retainer can be 3D-printed in-house on the same visit. Families see the finished smile for the first time and leave with the retainer timeline written down. This step takes 5 to 10 minutes.

Good to know: Minor gum puffiness after removal is normal and resolves within a week or two. Patients who have historically felt dental sensitivity can take an over-the-counter pain reliever 30 minutes before the appointment.

When Braces Removal is Appropriate

Debonding only happens when the teeth have finished moving. Dr. Viecilli evaluates the case against three criteria at the appointment before removal, so nothing gets taken off a visit too early. Braces are not removed to accommodate a wedding, prom, or vacation date unless the clinical finish has already been achieved.

Walk-in same-day removal works for most cases. The exceptions:

Lingual braces: Brackets bonded to the inside of the teeth need a longer removal appointment because the tools and visibility are different. Call ahead.
Cases with bonded fixed retainers: If the plan includes a bonded lower retainer (rare at Limestone Hills), the removal visit is split into two appointments because the fixed retainer is bonded the same day.
Cases with restorative work pending: Patients who plan to have crowns, veneers, or implants done immediately after braces should coordinate with both Dr. Viecilli and the restorative dentist before the removal date.
Cases with periodontal concerns: If the patient has active gum disease or significant bone loss, the removal is paired with a periodontal evaluation visit.

Walk-In Removal for Patients Who Started Elsewhere

Limestone Hills accepts walk-ins for braces removal during regular office hours, Tuesday through Friday, 9 am to 5 pm. The appointment slot is held for the patient on the schedule the moment treatment finishes; a walk-in is just an alternative if the patient prefers to come in unscheduled.
Current Limestone Hills patients: Walk in during office hours. The removal is included in the original treatment fee. Allow 90 minutes from check-in to retainer fitting.
Non-patients with active treatment elsewhere: Call ahead at (512) 720-6399. The fee is $400 per arch and the practice needs to confirm the brackets are removable in a single visit (some bonded retainer setups require a separate appointment).
Patients whose original orthodontist is no longer available: Limestone Hills routinely handles “stranded” cases where the original practice closed or the patient moved. Same $400-per-arch fee, same walk-in welcome, same in-house retainer fabrication.
$400
per arch · Upper $400 · Lower $400 · Both $700
Includes an i-CAT FLX V7 taken before the consult to evaluate the case, the consult itself, the debonding procedure (bracket and wire removal, adhesive cleanup, enamel polishing), and a written disclosure of any remaining orthodontic issues so the patient knows where the case stands. Retainer fabrication is quoted separately based on the option chosen below.

The walk-in consultation fee is credited toward the removal fee when the procedure is consented at the same visit.
Current Limestone Hills patients pay nothing for removal. Debonding, polishing, and one set of Essix retainers are included in the original treatment fee for every patient who started and finished active treatment with Dr. Viecilli.

Same-Day Retainer Delivery

Most orthodontic offices send retainer moulds to an outside lab and the patient waits one to two weeks for delivery, a period when teeth are most likely to shift because nothing is holding the new position. Limestone Hills Orthodontics handles retainer fabrication differently.

1

Bracket Removal (about 15 minutes)

Each bracket is gently rocked off the tooth using a debonding plier. No drilling, no heat. Most patients describe the sensation as pressure, not pain.

2

Adhesive Cleanup (about 20 minutes)

The residual adhesive is removed with a slow-speed handpiece and fine polishing burs. The enamel is then polished with prophy paste to restore the original surface texture.

3

Intraoral Scan (about 5 minutes)

Medit i700 digital scan captures the final tooth positions. No goopy impressions.

4

3D Model Print + Retainer Thermoform (about 45 to 60 minutes while the patient waits or returns later the same day)

The dental model is 3D-printed in-house, and then the Essix retainer is thermoformed directly on the model. The patient confirms the fit with Dr. Viecilli before walking out.

5

Retainer-wear Briefing (about 10 minutes)

Dr. Viecilli explains the wear schedule, the tightness test, and the long-term retention plan.

Same-day delivery depends on staff availability and time of consult. When the schedule allows, and there is enough staff time, the retainer is fabricated and delivered the same visit. When the schedule is full, or the appointment is late in the day, the retainer is fabricated, and the patient returns within 24 to 48 hours for the fitting. Not guaranteed, but often possible. Confirmed at the time of scheduling the removal visit.

Retention Handoff: Why Retainers are the Rest of Treatment

Every Limestone Hills braces case finishes with a same-day Essix retainer made in-house. The fee is included in the original treatment estimate. Patients who want a Vivera or Angel retainer instead can order one at the removal visit; those ship from the manufacturer in 2 to 3 weeks. A bonded fixed retainer is offered only for specific clinical indications (upper diastema with frenum involvement) and is not the default.

The retention plan starts the day the braces come off. Standard guidance:

First 6 months: Wear the Essix retainer full-time except when eating, drinking anything but water, and brushing.
After 6 months: Transition to nighttime-only wear, indefinitely. Teeth drift throughout life from aging, muscle pressure, and continuing growth in the 20s and 30s. The retainer prevents that drift.
The tightness test: Put the retainer in once a day. If it snaps in easily, the current wear cadence is working. If it feels tight or pinches, step wear back up until it is comfortable again. The retainer itself is the diagnostic tool. Dr. Viecilli does not publish fixed wear schedules because every patient’s retention needs are different.
Replacement schedule: Essix retainers typically last 18 to 36 months with daily wear before the plastic loses its memory. Same-day in-house replacement is $150 per arch when the patient brings the original 3D-printed model file.

Retainer Options & Pricing

Retainers are quoted based on the option chosen and whether Limestone Hills already has a digital model of the patient’s teeth. Patients who debonded at Limestone Hills have their scan on file; walk-in patients typically need a new Medit i700 scan at removal. All retainer options are 3D-printed or fabricated to a printed model produced in-house on the same visit whenever possible.

Buying ahead? $750 for 3 sets if a 3D model is on file, or $850 if a new scan is needed (one retainer free per bundle). Helpful for patients who want a backup set or two stored at home.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does braces removal hurt?

No. The removal sensation is pressure, not pain. Each bracket is gently rocked off the tooth in about 5 to 10 seconds. The polish step is similar to a routine dental cleaning. Most patients walk out without taking any pain medication.

How long does the removal appointment take?

About 90 minutes from check-in to retainer fitting. Bracket removal takes 15 minutes, adhesive cleanup 20 minutes, scan 5 minutes, retainer thermoform 45 to 60 minutes. Patients can wait in the office or run errands and return when the retainer is ready.

Can I have my braces removed if I started treatment elsewhere?

Yes. The fee is $400 per arch for non-patients. Call (512) 720-6399 ahead so the practice can confirm the brackets are removable in a single visit. Limestone Hills routinely handles “stranded” cases where the original practice closed or the patient moved.

Do I need a retainer right away?

Yes. Teeth start to drift back toward their original position within hours of bracket removal. Limestone Hills fabricates the Essix retainer the same day so the patient leaves with retention in place. The first 6 months of full-time wear are critical to lock the result in.

Can I have my teeth whitened the same day?

Limestone Hills recommends waiting 2 to 4 weeks before whitening. The enamel re-mineralizes during that window after the bracket adhesive is removed, and bleaching too soon can cause uneven color or sensitivity. The retainer trays double as bleaching trays once the wait period ends.
